The works of war and the works of mercy

On Monday, April 26, more than sixty Midwest Catholic Workers gathered inside and outside of the Federal Building in Chicago to invite people to reject the works of war and to practice the works of mercy. Several members of the White Rose Catholic Worker and Kairos Chicago communities participated in the action. While some Catholic Workers staged die-in's to remember the victims of war, others distributed food and drinks to passersby. We continue to pray for an end to war and the dawning of a new day of peace.

"The works of mercy are the opposite of the works of war, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, nursing the sick, visiting the prisoner. But we are destroying crops, setting fire to entire villages and to the people in them. We are not performing the works of mercy but the works of war. We cannot repeat this enough." -Dorothy Day, "In Peace Is My Bitterness Most Bitter," The Catholic Worker (January 1967)
